Zhuang Yuan

庄原

Zhuang Yuan is a ceramic artist based in Jingdezhen. He is passionate about glaze development and firing experiments, through which he explores the symbiotic relationship between nature, objects, and humanity.

The creative environment of Jingdezhen allows Zhuang Yuan to break free from existing glaze systems and independently develop glazes with his unique style. He employs a combination of gas kilns and wood kilns in reduction firing, which brings out distinctive colors from the metal elements in the glaze. The pigment molecules wander within the kiln, randomly adorning the surface of the ceramics with either intense or subtle details, evoking the carefree realm depicted by the Taoist philosopher Zhuangzi.

We appreciate not only the glazes of Zhuang Yuan’s works but also the graceful and powerful forms created by his hands. Using Zhuang Yuan’s ceramics for tea brewing always brings our minds to a state of deep awareness of the present moment.
